Step inside the walls of a psychiatric hospital and you’ll find a world shrouded in mystery. It’s a place many people fear, but few really understand. As an insider, I’ve experienced first-hand what it’s like to live and work within these walls. In this blog post, I’m going to share my experiences and insights with you - from the daily routines to the complex emotions that run through patients’ minds. So come along on this journey as we explore what really goes on inside a psychiatric hospital! What is a Psychiatric Hospital? A psychiatric hospital is a place where people who have mental health issues are treated. The term “psychiatric hospital” can refer to a number of different places, including hospitals that deal specifically with psychiatric patients, general hospitals that have added psychiatric services and facilities, or residential treatment centers for people with psychiatric problems. There are many different types of psychiatric hospitals, but all of them share some common features. First and foremost, psychiatric hospitals are places where people who have mental health issues can receive care and treatment. They may be able to stay there for an extended period of time, depending on the type of hospital they’re in. Psychiatric hospitals also tend to be very strict environments - staff members there are often dedicated to ensuring that their patients stay as healthy and safe as possible. Finally, psychiatric hospitals are often widely known for the unique treatments that they offer their patients. Many psychiatric drugs were first developed in psychiatry wards, and psychiatrists continue to play an important role in the development and administration of these drugs. In the United States, one in every five adults experiences a mental illness at some point in their lives (National Alliance on Mental Illness, 2016). In fact, nearly half of all Americans who experience a psychiatric disorder will do so at least once during their lifetime (Fatemi & George, 2016). Unfortunately, mental illness can be very difficult to treat and can lead to chronic conditions such as anxiety and depression. One of the most common ways that people experience mental illness is through contact with the mental health system. As indicated by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, an estimated 1 in every 25 adults in the United States will experience an episode of mental illness in their lifetime (Fatemi & George, 2016). This means that approximately one-in-five people will visit a psychiatric hospital at some point in their life. When I first arrived at my psychiatric hospitalization, I had no idea what to expect. I had never been hospitalized before and I wasn’t sure what to expect from my stay. The staff at my hospital were very welcoming and they made me feel like I was part of the community. Overall, my experience at the psychiatric hospital was positive. The biggest challenge that I faced during my stay was adjusting to being away from home and family. However, the staff members at the hospital were able to help me adjust to my new surroundings and make friends My Experiences While on Psychotropic Medications My experiences while on psychiatric medications have been varied and largely positive. I have found that the medications help me manage my moods and anxiety in a way that allows me to lead a more productive life. I have also found that the staff at the psychiatric hospital are knowledgeable and helpful in providing me with the support I need to maintain my treatment. I started taking antidepressants about two years ago after experiencing a significant decrease in my moods and an increase in my anxiety. Since then, I have generally been very pleased with the effects of the medication, although there are occasionally times when I feel like it doesn’t quite work as well as it should. The staff at the psychiatric hospital is always supportive and willing to answer any questions I may have about my medication or how it is working for me. Conclusion It has been said that one’s mental health is the sum total of their experiences. Whether it be good or bad, these experiences build up over time and shape who we are as individuals. I would like to share my experience of spending five days in a psychiatric hospital as an insight into how this can happen. Mental health is not a simple thing to understand, but hopefully reading my story will give you some understanding of what goes on inside these walls and perhaps even make you less judgmental when encountering someone who might appear unwell.
